Means of production

For Karl Marx the means of production and who owns them are crucial factors in determining the nature, class configuration and distribution of power in any given society. The means of production are those things necessary in order to produce, for example, machinery, land and money. According to Marx, the means of production are part of the forces of production, and whichever class owns and controls them is the dominant class in society. The capitalists’ ownership and control of the means of production in capitalist society makes them the ruling class, giving them both economic and political power.
